When Eddy Merckx, the most winning professional rider of all time, retired from racing, he set up his own frame manufacturing company. With guidance of the most skilled frame builders, especially Ugo De Rosa, the Eddy Merckx cycling works started to produce high-end frames.
The top of the line model for the first five years was the Professional which was made of Columbus SL tubing. From 1985 on it was the Corsa Extra. This extremely successful model was one of the best road bike frames you could get and therefore the choice of many professional teams. It dominated the peloton with its extremely well made triangle of light and rigid Columbus SLX tubes. But Merckx went one step further and decided to manufacture even more rigid frames with modern oversized, ovalised and the now legendary Columbus MAX tubing.
